Bishop’s Robes reflect culture
|

The robes will be worn on all major occasions.
Bishop Croft explains: "They were designed by Juliet Hemingray whose business is based in
Derby and who is one of the foremost designers of church fabrics. I’m delighted with the
way they have turned out.
"I wanted a design which draws on Christian imagery and yet is contemporary in feel and
style and reflects something of the life and colour of the gospel.
"The basic colour of the cope is as close to steel-grey as we could get, reflecting the traditional
industries of Sheffield. I also chose as my episcopal ring a plain ring of tungsten steel".
Dr Croft said that the universal aspect of ministry and mission also played a part in the
design process: "A concern throughout my ministry has been the love of God for the whole
world. The hood of the cope has the world as an emblem showing that the good news of
God’s love is relevant to every part of the globe. The colours and the other motifs on the cope
also draw out the wonder of God’s creation and our responsibility of care for the earth".
The bishop also explained: "One of the most important pictures Jesus gives us of the life of the
church is that of the branches of the vine rooted in Christ himself (John 15) and bearing fruit
in all kinds of ways. The cope and the stole are decorated with a vine and fruit of the vine to
emphasise this. The vine is also connected with the Holy Communion and with the
compassion and suffering of Jesus".
"The colours of the mitre picks up the theme of creation in the cope. On the front of the
mitre is the symbol of the cross – all Christian ministers are called to proclaim the good news
that through the death of Jesus on the cross each of us can share in God’s new life. On the
back of the mitre is the symbol of the dove – a symbol of the gift of God’s Spirit given at
Pentecost to the Church and also a symbol of God’s renewal of creation (in the story of the
ark) and of the gospel of peace.
"I hope and pray that the cope and mitre will be a reminder to me and to the many
thousands who will see it of the great love of God for the world, the powerful message of the
Christian gospel and the wonder of new life as a Christian".

The Bishop of Sheffield, Dr Steven Croft, has explained the narrative
behind the concept and design of his new bishop's robes.
In an interview, published on the Cathedral website, Dr Croft explains
how the history and culture of the region formed a major part of the
design and crafting of his new cope, mitre and stole.
A cope is the gown worn over the shoulders and is effectively
body-length; a stole is the material worn around the neck reminding a
priest or bishop that he bears the yoke of Jesus in his ministry; the mitre
is the headgear worn by a bishop designating the authority bestowed
on him by the church.
