Parish Worship
The 2nd Sunday of Epiphany
17th January 2021
In the name of the Father, and of
the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
May the light and peace of Jesus be
with you.
And also
with you.
May God be gracious to us and bless
us,
and make His face to shine upon us:
that your way may be known upon
earth,
and your saving power among all nations:
let the peoples praise you, O God:
let all the peoples praise you.
(Psalm 67:1-3)
Almighty God, to whom all hearts
are open,
all desires known,
and from whom no secrets are
hidden:
cleanse the thoughts of our hearts
by the inspiration of your Holy
Spirit,
that we may perfectly love you,
and worthily magnify your holy name;
through Christ our Lord.
Amen
Confession
During this
season of Epiphany, let us seek the renewal of our lives in the light of God’s
love for us, revealed by Jesus Christ:
Jesus, Saviour
of all, who revealed the breadth of god’s love, forgive us when we fail to show
care to those who are different.
Lord, have
mercy.
Lord, have
mercy.
Jesus, Son of
God, who revealed the depth of God’s love, forgive us when we are too busy to
pray, or to seek the Father’s will.
Christ, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Jesus, Son of
man, who revealed the cost of God’s love, forgive us when we make light of our
sins.
Lord, have
mercy.
Lord, have
mercy.
May Almighty
God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Gloria in Excelsis
As a forgiven people we join in the
Gloria in Excelsis.
Glory to God
in the highest,
and peace to
his people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly
King,
almighty God
and Father,
we worship you, we give you thanks,
we praise you
for your glory.
Lord Jesus
Christ, only Son of the Father,
Lord God, Lamb
of God,
you take away
the sin of the world:
have mercy on us;
you are seated
at the right hand of the Father:
receive our
prayer.
For you alone
are the Holy One,
you alone are
the Lord,
you alone are
the Most High, Jesus Christ,
with the Holy
Spirit,
in the glory
of God the Father.
Amen
The Collect
Almighty God,
in Christ you
make all things new:
transform the
poverty of our nature by the riches of your grace,
and in the
renewal of our lives
make known
your heavenly glory;
through Jesus
Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive
and reigns with you,
in the unity
of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now
and for ever.
Amen
Reading: 1 Sam 3:1-10
Now the boy Samuel was
ministering to the Lord under Eli. The word of the Lord was rare in those days;
visions were not widespread. At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow
dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his room; the lamp of God had
not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where
the ark of God was. Then the Lord called, “Samuel! Samuel!” and he said, “Here
I am!” and ran to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said,
“I did not call; lie down again.” So he went and lay
down. The Lord called again, “Samuel!” Samuel got up and went to Eli, and said,
“Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call, my son; lie down
again.” Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not
yet been revealed to him. The Lord called Samuel again, a third time. And he
got up and went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” Then Eli
perceived that the Lord was calling the boy. Therefore
Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down; and if he calls you, you shall say, ‘Speak,
Lord, for your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went
and lay down in his place. Now the Lord came and stood there, calling as
before, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is
listening.”
Gospel: John 1:43-51
The next day Jesus
decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” Now
Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael
and said to him, “We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the
prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth.” Nathanael said to him, “Can
anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” When
Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, “Here is truly an Israelite
in whom there is no deceit!” Nathanael asked him, “Where did you get to know
me?” Jesus answered, “I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you.”
Nathanael replied, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”
Jesus answered, “Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig
tree? You will see greater things than these.” And he said to him, “Very truly,
I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and
descending upon the Son of Man.”
Sermon
The Nicene Creed. (Please stand)
We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is,
seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and
the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and
glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of
sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
The Peace, (please stand)
Christ is our
peace.
If anyone is
in Christ, there is a new creation.
The old has
passed away: behold, everything has become new.
The peace of
the Lord be always with you and also with
you.
Intercessions
In peace let
us pray to the Lord.
Lord, in your
mercy
hear our
prayer.
At the end of
the prayers:
Merciful
Father,
accept these
prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen
Silence is
kept
The Lord’s Prayer
Believing in the promises of God,
let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us:
Our Father,
who art in heaven,
hallowed be
thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done;
on earth as it
is in heaven.
Give us this
day our daily bread.
And forgive us
our trespasses,
as we forgive
those who trespass against us.
And lead us
not into temptation;
but deliver us
from evil.
For thine is
the kingdom,
the power and
the glory,
for ever and
ever. Amen.
Eternal Lord,
our beginning
and our end:
bring us with
the whole creation
to your glory,
hidden through past ages
and made known
in Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen
Blessing
Christ the Son
of God perfect in you the image of his glory
and gladden
your hearts with the good news of his kingdom;
and the
blessing …
Let us go in
peace to love and serve the Lord.
In the Name of
Christ. Amen.
